a week agoThe staff are friendly enough. Service is good. However the haircut wasn’t good. I haven’t been well enough to talk via phonecall having had a nose surgery and there’s no email on their website, so for now I’m unable to contact them.I had my haircut on the 15th August 2023 @ 2:15pm. I ran late because my bus was late, so called to inform them once the bus arrived that I’m running late. They were great and said it’s not a problem.
I brought with me a laptop to show photos of cuts I’ve had before and look at other cuts online/photos I had already downloaded.
The barber provided very little to no creative input when I asked what styles he think would suit me. Always a red flag. I find most barbers sadly do this. Unless you go to London and pay £75+ for a cut. A good barber will provide various ideas and thoughts based on face shape etc.
Ultimately I defaulted back to a cut I’ve always had.
I asked the barber if he wants the photo up (it was a photo of me with the cut) on my laptop while he cuts my hair. He said no.
When he showed me the back of my head I was dissapointed. It was cut in a messy way. That’s the only way I can describe it. I wanted a preppy classic modern look. Which is how my cut looked in the photos I brought with me. Instead, the cut makes me look like a thug. 😔
I didn’t say anything because I was starving and was in a rush to prepare for my surgery which was taking place the next morning.
While he was styling my hair he used the hairdryer excessively. I think what he’s done is created segments which he heated up and laid back part by part.
There’s a section of hair on the parting at the top that’s been cut very short. Looks like its been done to accommodate the wave from the front. But it’s not how the cut should be. That hair will take forever to grow back to the right length now.
I haven’t been able to style the hair yet as I have a cast on my nose that I cannot get wet that’s coming off today (24th August 2023) and I don’t even think I can style it for several more weeks due to the nose (keep sticky chemicals away from it maybe… I’ll discuss with the consultant ENT to find out). Recovery from surgery takes 6 weeks or more. Full recovery is 12-18 months, but I should be able to style my hair in 6 weeks. But it could be 2 months or even 3 before I can. All depends how I heal and what the ENT consultant says.
I also haven’t been able to wash my hair since I had it cut. I washed it as soon as I came home after the cut. But I can’t wash it again because I can’t get the nose cast wet.
One thing that really annoyed me on the journey back home, was the wave kept falling onto my forehead. Over and over and over again. So incredibly frustrating.
The thing is with haircuts, you don’t really know how it looks if it’s styled for you at the barbers. You need to go home, wash it and style it yourself. And even then it can take a few days of washing styling and going through the day to find out if the cut is good or not.
My hair has always been something I take great pride in and is very important for me. So it really hurts when I’ve had a bad haircut. A great haircut can really provide a good self esteem boost too. A bad one has the opposite effect.
Here’s some photos of the cut as it is at the moment.
I’ve also included a photo of how the hair should look from the top. There shouldn’t be short hairs along the parting for example.
Also included are the 4 photos that show the cut I defaulted to that I had shown the barber and asked if he wants the photos up while cutting. It’s the 4 photos that are low quality in a room with lights on and a brown wall behind me.
As can be seen, my hair has been cut much shorter than how it was in those 4 photos.

He took extra time to consult before the cut using a reference photo, listened and understood to what I wanted, checked throughout if it was going in the right direction and got it spot on. Nice guy (as they all are) had a good chat and a laugh, it’s a nice chilled environment. I had my first proper barber visit yesterday and was very well looked after. Ellie was welcoming and patient, helped me decide how to cut my hair after a year of growth and shaped my beard. Absolutely returning!
So much more to the place both in size and facilities. Booked in for an Elemis Freestyle Deep Tissue Massage Full body today and it was absolutely amazing. I look forward to making this a much more regular routine for both haircuts and other services.
I had the honour of being a model for Summer @chaps today. I’m rather fussy with my hair and having long curls, I’m always worried about what barbour I visit. I’ve visited chaps many times before and knowing Martin was training Summer and overseeing I was immediately put at ease, but there was no need to stress, Summer was amazing , smiley and chatty and could see how willing she was to learn and make sure I was happy. The whole experience was an eye opener for me, most times we sit in a barbour chair chatting away and never really noticing what they are doing ,Un till the end result. But watching Martin passing on his knowledge and skill set, you begin to understand that art behind the trade .

I’ve tried so many barbers in Canterbury and NOBODY has ever got my boy’s hair right until today! Welcoming front of house team who couldn’t be more accommodating – and experienced barbers who do the extra without having to be asked. These guys are skilled, knowledgeable and so so good with the kids. Wouldn’t hesitate to use Chaps again and recommend them to anyone looking for a forever barber! We’ll be back in a couple of weeks in time for holiday.
