I visited this Lewes Road Branch today and paid at the self service tills. There was one lady (short, grey hair) assistant and it was a busy time. There was also a male assistant (tall, brown hair) opposite my till assisting another Gentleman with his till. It had a coin issue and the assistant was getting stressed as the problem seemed to not solve.

Meanwhile, my till called for assistance, the Lady assistant was at the far end and I patiently waited for her to come over to me. While waiting, other till lights came on in-between her coming to me so she felt she had the stop and help them first. I totally sympathise with her, she seemed alone and it was very busy.

Having waited there for quite a while, I felt frustrated, so I made a comment to my husband saying “They should have more staff at busy times!” (this was directed at management and NOT Staff!!) to which the very stressy male assistant opposite me, kneelin on the floor trying to fix the till, came over to “help” rudely commenting that “I’m trying to sort that till out, I can’t be everywhere at once!”. I was shocked, I calmly asked him not to be ratty and I explained I was not referring to him. I was not expecting any help from him as I could see he was busy!

He did what he had to for me at my till and went back to the till he was trying to fix. What I’m disgusted about is the fact that he carried on commenting what happened with me with to the Customer he whose till he was trying to fix!!! And they both laughed!!!

I work in retail, I know about the staff cut backs, my comment to my husband was out of sympathy for the lady assistant and frustrations towards people in the head office who make ridiculous decisions. This man today, just assumed the worse, which would have been quite understandable as I could see he was already stressed, but what is unacceptable is that he proceeded to carry on commenting about me to his customer. And I could hear it, and so did other customers!!

    Very poor customer service!

Not a bad shop by any stretch but I must knock at least one star off for the absolutely shocking men’s toilets.

With one lonely toilet, no soap dispenser, tired walls and a partially-exposed toilet roll holder, this could be the bleakest toilet I’ve ever experienced. Upon entry you almost feel as if you’ve been ripped from the warm, familiar embrace of John James Sainsbury and have been cast out into the biting cold.

With no natural light nor decoration for company you’re simply left with your own thoughts, which typically move towards “this is awful”, “where’s the soap” and “how has it come to this”.

You can genuenly see that there has been a change in management style. The store is always all dressed/faced and the colleagues always happy to help. You can spot the managers working alongside colleagues. And it’s pretty stocked even at peak times.

Hot counter has gone massively downhill. Rubbery/overcooked food and the selection is worse now. Barely any rotisserie chicken etc. I don’t understand the pizza counter – it is barely ever open. When it seemed to be, with toppings out etc, the man said it was closed and went in the back room to just sit there – I have a feeling the man at the hot counter isn’t too fond of his job Sainsburys. 🙃

A big Sainsbury’s, you can’t really complain about that. Great options and I found everything I needed every time I’ve been there. I’ve also never had to wait long for self check out

I have lived and worked in this area for almost two years. I am chef that happens to work just around the corner and I have to go here to shop around several times a day, I have never stolen from this shop, I have never gave any indication I would, yet from the moment I walk into the shop I’ve been stalked and harassed by security. Today they staff were absolutely disgraceful, with having been helped in the premises before hand on many occasions wearing my WORK UNIFORM the staff had the audacity to ID for an energy drink. Pretending as if they had no idea of who I am, I’m not an alien yet the staff today were disgraceful. To say I’m furious and embarrassed is an understatement and twitter will be my next tool I use to discredit this store and the staff who work there.

I was browsing with my friend in this store to see if they had what we were looking for but they didn’t. Before we knew it, the security guard stopped us and accused us of shoplifting when we didn’t and wanted to look through our bags. Will not recommend!

This store really needs better inventory management – really poor selection of items and usually out of stock of what they do sell. Let’s the Sainsbury’s chain down. I love the one on Lewes Road but this one is rubbish (I get that’s it’s a Sainsbury’s Local but still). Shame as it’s so close to us and really could capitalise on the monopoly it has in the area but falls short I’m afraid.

Useful, slightly smaller store, with cheap coffee+good pastries.

  1. It’s a good size store with friendly staff. Toilets are kind of hidden away with very little signage. The number 6 bus stops right outside so it is easy to get to by public transport

  2. Easy parking with plenty of space. Stock is limited. Don’t have many own brand cereals, and I refuse to pay for the ‘big name’ stuff. Seem to be very few actual staffed checkouts and rely on people doing self scan.

  3. The vegetables and fruit section is usually fresh. It is a large supermarket with argos inside. Unfortunately they closed down the cafe.
They have introduced ridiculous barriers at the exit where you have to scan a receipt to get out. The scan often won’t work. Scanning a receipt doesn’t prove that you’ve paid for everything you have in your basket so what is the point. And if you haven’t bought anything you have to find the security guard to let you out, but he sometimes can’t be found.

  4. You have to show a receipt to get out the doors. Ludicrous, bearing in mind that people stealing things can still just get out after they’ve bought one item, even if they’ve left with 3! Total waste of time. Now. You have to pay £1 to get a trolley. No pharmacy, out of date vegetables.
I wish it was a Tescos. I try my hardest not to go there anymore. Staff are lovely

  5. Good experience, had most of what we needed. I have to avoid the Tu section when with my OH as he has no patience with clothes shopping with me.
