Key Factors for the Best Gyms for Families
When considering the best gyms for families, there are several factors to keep in mind. Here are key aspects that make a gym family-friendly:
- Family-Focused Programs: The best gyms for families often offer programs and activities that cater to all age groups, from children to adults. Look for gyms that provide family fitness classes, parent-child workouts, or specialized activities designed for kids, such as sports leagues or swimming lessons.
- Childcare Services: A family-friendly gym should have reliable and safe childcare services available on-site. This allows parents to work out while their children are supervised by trained staff in a stimulating and secure environment.
- Family Memberships: Gyms that offer affordable and flexible family membership options make it easier for the whole family to join and participate. Look for gyms that provide discounted rates or customized membership packages for families to encourage everyone’s involvement.
- Variety of Fitness Options: The best gyms for families provide a wide range of fitness options to accommodate different interests and fitness levels. This may include cardio equipment, strength training areas, group fitness classes, swimming pools, indoor or outdoor sports facilities, and even recreational activities like rock climbing or trampolining.
- Kid-Friendly Amenities: Family-friendly gyms often have amenities that cater to children’s needs. This may include dedicated play areas, kids’ fitness equipment, family changing rooms, or accessible restroom facilities. These features create a welcoming environment for families with young children.
- Educational Programs: Gyms that offer educational programs related to health, nutrition, and overall wellness can benefit families. Look for gyms that provide workshops, seminars, or resources on topics like healthy eating, child development, or family-oriented fitness tips.
- Safe and Clean Environment: Maintaining a safe and clean environment is crucial for family-oriented gyms. This includes regular equipment maintenance, adequate safety measures, proper sanitation practices, and attentive staff to ensure the well-being of all family members.
- Family Events and Activities: Engaging families through special events and activities helps create a sense of community within the gym. Look for gyms that organize family-friendly events like fitness challenges, holiday-themed activities, or outdoor picnics to foster social connections among families.
- Convenient Hours and Locations: Family-friendly gyms should have convenient operating hours and accessible locations. This allows family members to fit workouts into their schedules more easily, making it feasible for everyone to participate in fitness activities.
- Positive Reviews and Testimonials: Before choosing a gym for your family, consider reading reviews or testimonials from other families who are members. Their experiences can provide valuable insights into the gym’s family-friendly atmosphere, services, and overall suitability.
Remember, the best gym for families will depend on individual preferences, the specific needs of your family members, and your budget. It’s important to visit potential gyms, ask for trial memberships or tours, and assess how well they align with your family’s requirements before making a decision.

If I can give this place 2.5 stars, I would. Base needs to cap their memberships already. The gym is too CROWDED. I would visit the facilities at various hours throughout the day and I cannot find a good time to arrive. I would try coming between 5:30-9AM, still crowded. Anytime after 4pm till close, even more crowded. Expect the weekends to be more of the same no matter the time.
If this gym were to solve the crowding issue, it’ll be a 4 star gym in my opinion, given the price. The $150/month price tag is much higher than gyms I’ve subscribed to in the past, but you need to realize that this facility is located right above the Grove Street PATH station in DTJC and they have absolutely no competitors.. I was appalled by the lack of gym options in Jersey City when I moved here.
The equipment & amenities are good. I usually frequent their turf-floored strength training room, which is nice. But of course, just with a dozen people in there you already feel suffocated. They have all the types of equipment you need, but my only wish is that their dumbbell section was a bit larger.
The gym also features two sizable multi-purpose rooms for classes, or if you wish to do your own solo warm-ups or exercise in.
They usually have fresh towels available and the staff is really kind. Finding a locker in the locker rooms is difficult and if you need to shower before heading to work in the mornings, it’s borderline impossible. I would say, even though the locker rooms get a lot of traffic, the staff does a really good job of keeping it clean.
In conclusion, as someone who only really has an hour per day to exercise, I have found myself not visiting the gym as often and opting for other forms of exercise due to the overcrowding of this gym. I would give it a higher rating if it were to fix this issue.
By Christian Gomez (a week ago)This gym has overall better quality equipment and more exciting fitness classes than other gyms in JC, however there are just too many cons for its price point. If you come at any peak time, it is not only difficult to work out, but nearly impossible. I have been there countless times where I cannot find a single locker, there are no more hand towels or sanitizers left, and there are no more body towels for showering.
Even if you come around 9 pm on weekdays, you will realize there is still a wait to use some strength equipment. Additionally, during the winter it is notoriously hot and humid in the gym, to the point of where my glasses fog up and it can be very uncomfortable.
BASE promises a luxury experience, however, it is just not equipped to handle so many members and to call itself the “Equinox of Jersey City.” Unless you are coming to exercise in the late morning, the $150+ monthly price tag is unfortunately not worth it.
By Samil Tabani (4 months ago)Really amazing yoga classes, I also enjoy the sauna, and now the roof top collective classes! 😍By Auriane Maymard (2 weeks ago)I have been a member for approximately 18 months and lately the quality of this gym has gone down enough that it doesn’t justify the exorbitant membership fee. I would give it 2.5 stars if I could. So many new members have joined that the gym is crowded even on weekends. Forget about coming on weekdays at peak times unless you want to wait at least 15-20 minutes for some equipment. What they don’t tell you when you sign up is that the people who live in the apartment building upstairs get some sort of discounted/free membership to the place while everyone else pays at least $160 per month. For the amount of money you are paying, the space of the gym is pretty small and there is oftentimes only one machine of a particular type. They only have one free weight leg press machine for example so it is almost always occupied at peak times. And don’t get me started on how crowded the free weight/dumbbell area is most times of the day. Most LA fitness clubs I’ve been to are bigger than this place and have more machines which should tell you something. My biggest gripe with this place however has to be the hours that it is open. The gym closes at 6 PM on weekends and will use any and every holiday as an excuse to open late and close early. How are you going to call yourself a luxury gym and charge such high membership fees yet close earlier than Blink fitness? A lot of us have plans on weekends but aren’t able to make it to the gym before it closes at 6 PM.
In terms of the good aspects, the amenities are adequate but it’s nothing to call home about. The steam room has a constant dingy smell and there was a hole in the ceiling that was there when I last went. There are shaving supplies and other toiletries in the men’s locker room. The locker room and the gym in general seems to have a humid atmosphere at certain times especially in the summer and you are often hard pressed to find a free locker at peak times. Unfortunately, lately equipment has been breaking down and the water system seems to be constantly needing maintenance. The smoothie bar is actually something I love about this place although their prices are also a bit on the higher side. And almost everyone else working out at the gym is courteous and cleans up after themselves. All in all though, I don’t think I’ll be able to continue my membership here in the long term simply because the membership fee doesn’t justify the current quality of this gym. I would say that this is a pseudo-luxury gym if anything and certainly not up to the likes of places like Lifetime Fitness or Equinox which is unfortunate because it would be nice to have a place like that in Jersey City.
By Ravi Upadhyay (2 weeks ago)many members wear shoes in sauna and steam rooms, higher authorities have been notified and involved to ensure the hygiene and safety of the guests. Still figuring out the rush hours peaks, staff is great, some maintenance staff grumpy and prefer to to be home rather than doing their job. Some members get mad when told to follow rules then they get their membership cancelled which is niceBy M P (7 months ago)

I highly recommend!!By Brooke Rochman (2 weeks ago)Jane DO has been such a great gym to be apart of. Every instructor has taken the time to make each participant feel welcome and seen, the energy in the room is truly contagious, and having a women-centric gym has been super empowering. The class styles are all so different, yet they always leave my entire body feeling like I DID THE DAMN THING. Some of my favorite instructors include Cristin, Paige and Marisa!By Mohini Savalia (5 months ago)Highly recommend Jane DO’s Trampoline class! A great way to have fun while working out and feel comfortable no matter your level of fitness skill/technique. The staff is welcoming, encouraging, and makes it hard to not want to come back for another class. A workout experience unlike anything else I’ve found, it’s definitely worth a try.By Grace Aroune (5 months ago)I love Jane DO classes, especially the Tramp class! Beware when signing up for personal training classes. I have been going to this gym for about 2 years now (Jersey City – Garfield). The staff is super friendly and I can say they do their best to keep the gym clean. A few weeks ago I was approached by one of the PT managers to sign up for PT; I shared my reasons as to why I wouldn’t want to join and he convinced me to give it a try. I give it a try sign up, ask if I could cancel at any time. They said yes but conveniently decided not share the fact that I would get charged a 50% fee of my total balance if I wanted to cancel. I tried to speak to them and reason as to how these are very shady practices. Also the agreement states that all sessions must be 30 min, which one of my sessions was not. Regardless, they basically told me that there’s nothing that can be done and will continue to charge me until I decide to cancel and pay the fee which is about ($400). So to break it all down, when you sign up there’s NO WAY to get out of this contract even if you have to move, if they don’t adhere to their side of the contract, or if it’s just not working for you. It really sucks that it comes down to this, this gym was so convenient for me and I really was not thinking about leaving any time soon.
i tried entering the gym with my brother and an employee at the desk asked for both my brothers ID and my ID, my brother gives his but i don’t have mine, i tell her i have a photo of my passport on my phone, but she isn’t accepting that saying “i have a good idea of who shaun angeles is and you don’t look like him”. first of all excuse me? second the membership is under my name with MY photo, but because this employee just has such a good idea of who i’m supposed to be i was not allowed entry into the gym where i’m paying to enter.
Please refrain to join this gym. I took an Ultimate membership they charged me despite telling them to stop the membership and reported it to collection agency. At the time i had joined 49$ was annual fee but they charged me $65 stating that their policy has changed and despite not using the service they charged me $232 for default, which in turn was their default. For cancellation they would want you to send a registered letter and not a request in person which is obnoxious.
I would suggest to opt for some good gym which is professional.
I posted a review regarding the charges posted by retro fitness despite membership being with no commitment. They replied to my review stating that please contact us we can work this out. After a brief call the answer was “we cant do anything”.
Guys please refrain from this gym if you want peace of mind. Join LA fitness with AAA membership that is much cheaper and they are professional unlike thus gym.
I love coming to the gym here with my husband. We usually go early morning before work. Due to a schedule change today we had to go after work. The front of counter staff Natasha was very rude. He aggressiveness made me feel uncomfortable when she gave me a hard tine about my guest sign in. I pressed all the steps and she accused my husband of lying and saying I was a returning guest. She then demanded my id and I apologized and explained my information is in the system. She then gave me the ipad back to redo the sign in because she didnt believe me. She is a not the type of person I would ever want to represent my company. And she was training. I feel bad for that girl
