The Ultimate Guide to the SGD Exchange Rate

The Singapore dollar (SGD) is the official currency of Singapore. The exchange rate between the SGD and other currencies, such as the US dollar (USD), is constantly fluctuating. There are a number of factors that can affect the SGD exchange rate, including:

  • Interest rates: When interest rates in Singapore are higher than interest rates in other countries, the SGD tends to appreciate against those currencies. Conversely, when interest rates in Singapore are lower than interest rates in other countries, the SGD tends to depreciate against those currencies.
  • Economic growth: When the Singapore economy is growing faster than other economies, the SGD tends to appreciate against those currencies. Conversely, when the Singapore economy is growing slower than other economies, the SGD tends to depreciate against those currencies.
  • Political stability: When there is political instability in Singapore, the SGD tends to depreciate against other currencies. Conversely, when there is political stability in Singapore, the SGD tends to appreciate against other currencies.
  • Trade balance: When Singapore has a trade surplus, meaning it exports more goods and services than it imports, the SGD tends to appreciate against other currencies. Conversely, when Singapore has a trade deficit, meaning it imports more goods and services than it exports, the SGD tends to depreciate against other currencies.
  • Speculation: Speculation is the buying and selling of currencies in the hope of making a profit. When there is a lot of speculation in the SGD market, the exchange rate can be more volatile.
  • News events: Major news events, such as natural disasters, wars, and political elections, can also affect the SGD exchange rate.

The SGD exchange rate is a complex and ever-changing market. The factors that affect the exchange rate can vary over time, and it is important to stay up-to-date on the latest news and developments in order to make informed trading decisions.

Here are some additional things to keep in mind when considering the factors that affect the SGD exchange rate:

  • The relative strength of the Singapore and US economies is one of the most important factors affecting the SGD/USD exchange rate. When the Singapore economy is strong, the SGD tends to appreciate against the USD. Conversely, when the US economy is strong, the SGD tends to depreciate against the USD.
  • The interest rate differential between Singapore and the United States is another important factor affecting the SGD/USD exchange rate. When interest rates in Singapore are higher than interest rates in the United States, the SGD tends to appreciate against the USD. Conversely, when interest rates in Singapore are lower than interest rates in the United States, the SGD tends to depreciate against the USD.
  • The risk appetite of investors is also a factor that can affect the SGD/USD exchange rate. When investors are risk-averse, they tend to sell the SGD and buy the USD. Conversely, when investors are risk-seeking, they tend to buy the SGD and sell the USD.
  • The SGD/USD exchange rate is also affected by a number of other factors, such as trade balance, speculation, and news events.

By understanding the factors that affect the SGD/USD exchange rate, you can make more informed decisions about when to buy or sell the SGD.

Needed to change crisp USD bills for an upcoming trip to a nearby SEA country, but was told to go to a bank instead for mint notes. Quite surprised to hear this from a money changer. Otherwise, honest service as I’ve changed other currencies here before.

Friendly staff. My parents and I have been getting our Malaysian Ringgit here for years due to the good rates. Of course do your own due diligence on the expected rates. I don’t know what the other reviewers mean about not getting a receipt cos I always get one.

I am about to travel for a few weeks with my friend as a graduation trip and we agreed to each bring a budget that was around SGD 4,000 (covering a few countries).

Reading the reviews and ratings here, I decided to use this money changer. It was the worst decision.

    No receipt was given.

Upon handing over the cash, the staff immediately snatched the money leaving me no time to react. The amount I received was about 300 SGD less than what my friend received when she went to another money changer near another MRT station in the East, changing the exact same amount of money.

Do yourself a favour and avoid this shop. Don’t make the same mistake as me and ignore the honest low reviews given by previous users, believing the high ratings which may not be truthful.

Sure the owner can say, please contact me or at my shop via my mobile number. But no receipt was given, so how can we even rectify this scam?

Exchange rate is competitive if you are in a rush and nearby. However, their attitude is quite bad. They will always ask you to give more so they can round up to give you a whole number and there are no change. Therefore, they eat your few cents/dollar. No receipt provided as well. Count your money before you guys leave folks.

Changed some Japanese yen today. The rates you get depends on who you talk to, and we got two different rates from the three men there.

They seem sincere enough and the exchange went smoothly, which is all that should matter.

Easy enough to find, and there is an OCBC next door if you require an ATM.
