Key Factors for the Best Gyms for Families

When considering the best gyms for families, there are several factors to keep in mind. Here are key aspects that make a gym family-friendly:

  1. Family-Focused Programs: The best gyms for families often offer programs and activities that cater to all age groups, from children to adults. Look for gyms that provide family fitness classes, parent-child workouts, or specialized activities designed for kids, such as sports leagues or swimming lessons.
  2. Childcare Services: A family-friendly gym should have reliable and safe childcare services available on-site. This allows parents to work out while their children are supervised by trained staff in a stimulating and secure environment.
  3. Family Memberships: Gyms that offer affordable and flexible family membership options make it easier for the whole family to join and participate. Look for gyms that provide discounted rates or customized membership packages for families to encourage everyone’s involvement.
  4. Variety of Fitness Options: The best gyms for families provide a wide range of fitness options to accommodate different interests and fitness levels. This may include cardio equipment, strength training areas, group fitness classes, swimming pools, indoor or outdoor sports facilities, and even recreational activities like rock climbing or trampolining.
  5. Kid-Friendly Amenities: Family-friendly gyms often have amenities that cater to children’s needs. This may include dedicated play areas, kids’ fitness equipment, family changing rooms, or accessible restroom facilities. These features create a welcoming environment for families with young children.
  6. Educational Programs: Gyms that offer educational programs related to health, nutrition, and overall wellness can benefit families. Look for gyms that provide workshops, seminars, or resources on topics like healthy eating, child development, or family-oriented fitness tips.
  7. Safe and Clean Environment: Maintaining a safe and clean environment is crucial for family-oriented gyms. This includes regular equipment maintenance, adequate safety measures, proper sanitation practices, and attentive staff to ensure the well-being of all family members.
  8. Family Events and Activities: Engaging families through special events and activities helps create a sense of community within the gym. Look for gyms that organize family-friendly events like fitness challenges, holiday-themed activities, or outdoor picnics to foster social connections among families.
  9. Convenient Hours and Locations: Family-friendly gyms should have convenient operating hours and accessible locations. This allows family members to fit workouts into their schedules more easily, making it feasible for everyone to participate in fitness activities.
  10. Positive Reviews and Testimonials: Before choosing a gym for your family, consider reading reviews or testimonials from other families who are members. Their experiences can provide valuable insights into the gym’s family-friendly atmosphere, services, and overall suitability.

Remember, the best gym for families will depend on individual preferences, the specific needs of your family members, and your budget. It’s important to visit potential gyms, ask for trial memberships or tours, and assess how well they align with your family’s requirements before making a decision.

My husband goes here, and he absolutely loves it. He has a personal trainer there 4 days a week and looks forward to it every time.
They are expanding more, which is awesome to see.
I used to go here too and it was a really nice facility with a great staff. I’m just more of an at-home-workout kind of person.

I joined here six months ago on the advice of my fitness coach. I’m pleased with the facilities and the equipment, both of which are well-maintained. The staff are friendly and engaging and many of the other regular members are likewise, allowing you to “work in” on a machine between their work sets (I’ve also made some new friends this way 😊)

That said, the membership feels oversold against this location’s size. It could use two more bar cages, three more benches, two more cable machines and maybe 30% more mid-weight dumbbells. So I’m conscious that, if I’m there past 5pm on weekdays, that I’ll need to wait for my turn on equipment or pivot to a replacement exercise to keep my momentum.

There was also a period spanning several months where a group of about 20 boys from a well-known local private school would come in with their coaches, turning the whole facility into a pubescent Kidz Zone between 3 and 4:30pm 😒

Taking those factors into account, I’m able to consistently get three, solid 90-120 minute workouts in every week, covering barbell, dumbbell, bench, machines and turf. I’m happy to be a member and am looking forward to experiencing the results of the expansion!

Friendly staff, convenient location, plenty of equipment. Owners have foresight to expand based on volume of clientele.

I see gyms as places for self improvement and advocacy. They offer a place for us to better our body, mind, and social skills. They’re a good cross section of society and you’ll meet friendly and unpleasant individuals alike.

If you need something, broker a conversation beginning with kindness. Someone takes your equipment? Ask a question – they may not know they did. Most people will let you work in with them between sets – within reason. Consider that the gym and clientele may need improvement, but so may we.

I worked previously as a trainer, in retail, and in healthcare. I’m a believer in taking responsibility for myself. Ask how we can change, less how others can. You dollar cost average into markets for retirement, Catalyst is a solid local business to “health cost average” into yourself.

Thanks to those who keep this health Mecca afloat! Props to Chris and Mark for being great personalities within their team!

Joined this location because other than LA Fitness it is the only gym that is in the downtown area. Still takes 20 minutes to get there and the gym is ALWAYS crazy busy (I have tried many different times throughout the day/week). The membership is too high for the size of the facility so you’re always fighting for equipment or you’re stuck on the treadmill just waiting for something to free up, so you’re there even longer than you should be if it weren’t so crowded all the time. Don’t waste your time or money until they either expand or reduce membership.

When I called to cancel my membership, she told me I had to go online and send them a message saying I waned to cancel or come in in person.

I didn’t even have the option to cancel online, I hade to send a message to them informing them I wanted to cancel and wait for their reply.

When asked if she could do it for me right there, she said no. Terrible customer service on a regular basis at the desk by the young employees on the weekends.

TrainSMART sets the standard for personal fitness, health and nutrition. If you do not read anymore of this review, just know that you will not find a more encouraging and knowledgeable staff than at TrainSMART, and you should not hesitate or be intimidated by walking in their doors and improving your life.

I referred my mother, who was in her early 60s, to TrainSMART and Joe Fox (President) in hopes of her finding someone that would truly invest in her and optimize her health. Joe has exceeded all expectations in this regard. After years of trying the “start-walking-on-the-treadmill and then lift-this-weight” trainers at various local gyms, we found someone that did not just settle on what is typical. Instead, Joe started with a blank sheet of paper and truly evaluated the health needs of my mother and developed a program that was right for her. It is not a static program either; it evolves and adapts as progress is made, maintaining a challenging yet achievable tempo. The personalized program is grounded in Joe’s decades of experience and true love for what he does.

Further, the encouragement that Joe offers is incredible. He has taken someone that was once intimidated and scared of a gym setting and turned her into a confident and motivated individual. The positive change that I have seen in my mother’s life over just a few months is profound. She is physically stronger, more confident, mentally healthier and, most importantly, simply happier. I did not think this change was possible. If someone told me that Joe walked on water, I would believe them 🙂

This is not just a review of TrainSMART. It is a public thank you to Joe and his staff for going above and beyond to make a positive difference in people’s lives. It may sound extreme, but I believe they have set my mother on an entirely different path towards a higher quality of living and in all likelihood added years if not decades to her life. Thank you for what you are doing and continue to do – the world needs more people like those at TrainSMART.

This Spring I have been an intern at TrainSMART Personal Fitness and the experience has been so amazing. Day in and day out I am reminded of the passion and determination that TrainSMART puts into making sure that each and every one of their clients achieve their goals. All of the trainers are very likeable and knowledgeable individuals who always go the extra mile to ensure the clients safety and success. It has been a pleasure being able to spend this Spring working with and learning from TrainSMART. If you are looking to get in shape, relieve joint/back pain, or simply just feel better about yourself, TrainSMART is the perfect gym for you!

I’ve been training at TrainSMART for about seven months now and I am beyond impressed. Not only is the facility extremely convenient for me, being located in the same building as where I work, but the staff and trainers are all truly top-notch. They are incredibly professional, knowledgeable, and gracious, especially Dr. Mancuso, who has worked very closely with me to design my programs and keep me on track and motivated toward my goals.

Prior to starting at TrainSMART, I was nearing the end of my rope with my lower back issues that had been plaguing me for years. I had tried everything short of surgery, but nothing seemed to provide any lasting relief. My chiropractor recommended I give Physical Therapy a try and I was turned on to TrainSMART by a coworker who had a great experience with them.

In the short time that I’ve been training there, I have had a transformational improvement in my lower back health. I am happy to report that I am almost symptom-free now and am able to enjoy activities that I thought were lost to me forever.

Overall, I cannot recommend TrainSMART enough. Even if I did not work in the same building I would still take time out of my busy week to go there and get in a workout. They brought me back from the edge and with their help I now live a more fulfilling life.

That you Brandon and Joe and everyone at TrainSMART!

TrainSMART has changed my life and that is not an exaggeration. I had the unfortunate experience of having severe and debilitating knee pain right before Christmas 2022. It was clear that this was not something that would improve without some life changes and professional support.

I stated training with Joe Fox at TrainSMART after the start of the New Year. With his excellent knowledge base and ability to motivate, I was quickly on my way to recovery (WITH NO SURGERY!) I started out limping and barely able to walk, but after three months. I can most days walk without any pain and I continue to improve. I feel healthier and stronger since I began training with Joe. By the way, I’m a 64 year old woman! He has taught me it is never too late to adopt healthy habits! He is incredibly supportive, patient and kind. I feel comfortable with him and his establishment, and he continues to increase my confidence everyday. I used to despise exercise but now I miss it when I happen to miss a session at TrainSMART. Do yourself a favor, do not put it off, start now. I wish I had picked up the phone and called Joe many years ago.

I’ve been an intern here at TrainSMART Personal Fitness for the past 4 months as an undergraduate at the University at Buffalo studying Exercise Science. My experience so far has been nothing short of incredible. Mr. Joe Fox and Dr. Brandon Mancuso has inspired not only myself, but all the interns here to strive to be the best versions of ourselves, to never stop learning, and to prioritize our clients in keeping them safe. They have given me the necessary tools to succeed in my career and have put the time and effort into furthering my knowledge in functional exercises, stretches, and techniques to make sure that every client is taken care of in a safe and professional manner. I’ve even been given the opportunity to train clients one-on-one and develop relationships. It’s been a great experience so far and I’m looking forward to learning even more here at TrainSMART.

  1. A. The Club: would it kill their employees to look up from their cell phones to at least nod when you come & go? Yesterday the life guard waved when I entered, shocked, I waved back, “No” he said, “you have 10 minutes until my break”. Break from what? sitting and looking at your phone for 2 hours? Beside the whirlpool sat the same discarded band-aide from TWO DAYS AGO – I know something he could do on his break. Since I returned 2 weeks ago, someone had broken all the towel hooks off the wall next to each shower leaving the remaining metal shards bolted to the wall, what’s up with that?
    B. The Members: Although there are a # of trash receptacles throughout the men’s locker room, there is litter EVERYWHERE. It’s a club you have to pay to attend, there shouldn’t be litter ANYWHERE. Deal breaker was yesterday when these 2 characters came into the sauna & one of them spit on the floor before he sat down. HE SPIT ON THE FLOOR. Who, sorry, what does that?
–this club could be a great experience — unfortunately, it’s not.

  2. La fitness is a Scam. No one is available for help. If you want to cancel your membership you have to do it in person but no one knows how to cancel memberships except for one person who is never here.

I have been to this location 3 times to cancel my membership and they keep telling me I have to wait or come back another time.

I knew I should have never given this gym another try. Their hours are not the best compared to other gyms. If you have to change the payment method you have 15 people calling you trying to collect but if you need someone to help answer a question there are crickets.

No one is available to help at desks. The only one who can help is on the phone
    for a personal issue.

  3. This gym close their door at 9:30 when they close at 10 o’clock I went in to use the sauna after work and all doors are lock. That is unacceptable especially when it’s $40 a month and half of their machine doest work. I am livid!!! If you’re looking for a gym membership consider your options elsewhere.

  4. After several months, the front entrance is still hazardous. Strong body odors, stained carpets, dusty and cracked machines. Some of the TVs don’t work at all. Most of the cycles do not have RFID, QR codes or Bluetooth to track workouts. The location is very accessible from Hertel or Elmwood. Parking lot is inadequately lit at night. Grounds are litter free. There is a small bike rack to the right of the entrance. Pool, sauna, lockers, and showers are clean and supplied. Wish they had extended hours or 24 hour key fob service. This facility closes early Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays which is insipid. Staff have always made eye contact and are friendly. Manager is very helpful and accommodating.

  5. Unfortunately after a few years I had to leave and go somewhere else. The pros-decent equipment when it wasn’t broken, sauna, hot tub and pool (again when it isn’t broken) & basketball court. Friendly managers, front desk etc. Now for the negative- There is a major cleanliness issue. I say that as a person who has worked out in truly awful conditions. I used to work out at the UB south campus gym which didn’t have air conditioning and had rats. I have run outside in subzero temperatures or low oxygen climates. I would say it is worse here compared to any conditions I’ve ever exercised in. Additionally, over time I became uncomfortable here. You don’t see too many people here training for actual sports. There are a lot of people who come here to stand around, talk and stare at others. As someone who has run dozens of road races, cycled 100+ mile distances and played multiple sports and is now slowly getting back to my old level of fitness after an illness this gym no longer aligns with my goals. I highly recommend looking into other options. I was able to find a much nicer gym for only 10 dollars more a month. Even planet fitness is cleaner and better quality than this location. Planet fitness was also good for me when I was traveling a lot as you have access to gyms everywhere. I highly recommend other la fitness locations. This one just needs a major rehabilitation. I got tired of being afraid of catching a disease here and strange behavior from some guests so it’s time to go lol
