My wife and I moved from California two years ago and moved to Texas. Texas is great but San Diego California will always be my home.
Unfortunately, my wife and I had to come back to San Diego to attend a funeral. We flew out for the weekend to pay our respects.
I rented a car from Hotwire and arrived at the airport to pick up our car. We later learned our rental company was off-site.
Hmm, I wasn’t expecting that. I looked at my reservation and saw my rental was through a company called Economy Rent a Car. I have never heard of this company.
I called the company and was advised a ride would be sent to my location to pick my wife and I up from the rental area where all the other rental car companies are located.
A driver arrived promptly and took us to this off-site location. The van driver was very polite but the van was a little dirty so I was already feeling like I might have made a mistake on my rental choice.
We arrived at the car rental lot and the place looked great. I was born and raised in San Diego and I didn’t recognize this place. I walked in and was very short with the lady helping me.
My wife told me I was short with the lady and the staff thought I was rude. I can be too direct with people sometimes.
I forget how sensitive some people can be. I’m old school and straight to the point when I’m taking care of business (I keep my military bearing at all times. I’m just direct when I’m talking to people).
I didn’t want to get burned by this unknown rental company.
Not to mention when I was asked for my proof of insurance, I had to show proof of my car insurance and provide my USAA policy number.
Something I have never had to do but I was cool with it. Business is business. I wouldn’t rent a car to someone without verification of insurance.
The car we were given was in excellent shape but had a few scratches on it. Nothing major.
We had no problems with the car at anytime. The company sent me pictures of the car and the beginning mileage to my email.
The pictures documented the scratches I had located on the vehicle when I first took possession of the car.
I also received a video of the car and the minor scratches I had showed the agent who gave us the car.
I was shocked how thorough my transaction was. I felt terrible I was so short with the staff who originally helped me.
I tried to call back to apologize but was unable to get through. I was there in the City for a funeral so please forgive me if I came off rude.
That was truly not my intention. I just never heard of Economy Car Rental. I guess I don’t get out enough.
This company exceeded my expectations. My rental was flawless and my transportation back to the airport was timely. The transportation van, this time, was clean.

Classic shady car rental place that advertises a great deal then ends up being more expensive than the reputable brands, with all the required add-ons. Added they are rude. If you can’t save money, save time and headache by going literally anywhere else…

Had to take 2 shuttles to get to their site.. prepare for 40-50 minutes to and from site…when I arrive, they said my rental is cancelled since I’m 2 hours late (at this point I knew I’m getting played)..on queue he says he can get me to an upgraded car for additional $40 a day…standard bait and switch scam..
Just do your research..

Advertises they are located at the airport…you actually have to get 2 shuttles to their off site location…once there they start over charging you and adding on stuff….by that time I’m too tired from the flight and shuttle ride to location I just say whatever…
Horrible experience. Unethical and super shady business practice…someone needs to investigate these people…
So for the cheaper price it did not bother me to have to do an extra transfer to get to their location, they provided it so no big deal.
Our BEWARE moment: We had our set reservation yet upon arrival we were told they had no standard cars and wouldn’t for approximately 2 hours. Well who really wants to be stranded at their very small office with all of your luggage for 2 extra hours? Not I! Well they were quick with a solution! For an extra 20 a day I can drive away in a premium vehicle. Urgh! Yup we gave in… they would not budge on price. Car was in great condition. Return process was easy. We filled up gas and did a quick car wash before hand. So you have to take the good with the bad.
I had a great experience renting a car from Economy Rent A Car in San Diego. I did not have to wait very long at all for the shuttle. (The location is offsite from the Rental Cars, so you must take an additional shuttle once you get to the Rental Car place.) Then at the Economy desk, everything went very smoothly. The car that I had rented was available and ready to go, and the staff was super friendly. Fernando was the guy that helped me. Very nice, answered all my questions. And the price was fantastic!! I highly recommend this company and will rent from them again.
